CARNIVAL IN SLOVENIA

Carnival is the time when we make a masquerade. We celebrate the carnival with a masquerade, because masks should repel winter.

The carnival is movable and depends on the Easter (the carnival is 7 weeks before Easter). Real carnival days are two; a carnival Sunday (in the liturgy quinquages) and a carnival Tuesday. In the sense of the word “masquerade, carnival scheme” there are also expressions: pústar, pústnjak, pústnik, fášenk and kurent. As a general word, kurent has the meaning “carnival pattern in the fur, with bells around the waist and a special hat, known in eastern Slovenia.”

This year’s carnival was on March 6th. The carnival is celebrated annually throughout Slovenia, but originates from Ptuj. Fun in the city always begins at noon and lasts until late evening hours.
