Two new educative projects, the “Fair Trade” and the “Grandparents project”, started this month in our school.
This 23th of November the Fair Trade has begun in our school .
Fair trade is a social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainable farming. Members of the movement advocate the payment of higher prices to exporters, as well as improved social and environmental standards. The movement focuses in particular on commodities, or products which are typically exported from developing countries to developed countries, but also consumed in domestic markets (e.g. Brazil, India and Bangladesh) most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, wine, sugar, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers and gold.
This activity is included in the Academic Annual Programme of the school, in the Pastoral Department. The students from Secondary levels can buy these products during the breaks and they will be attended by students from 1st grade of Secondary. In this way all of us contribute our grain of sand in solidarity.
Trying to go further in this support, this year our school accorded with the school catering to use coffee bought in the Fair Trade, and the coffee machine in the staff room will do the same. During all the special days of the academic year (School day, Cultural week, Peace day, …) the students will offer their products to all the visitants.
The other activity that has started in November is named “Grandparents´ project”, and it is a beautiful initiative in which students of 4th and 3rd of Secondary Education go to a residence for the elderly of Olivenza named “Caser” to spend time with the elders.
The students go there once a week during the morning, usually around 1 hour, and there they ask questions to them to know how they used to live and what they used to do in the past, sometimes they cook some traditional cake, or for example in this days near Christmas students also help them making Christmas greetings for their friends and families. The main goal is to share time with the elders doing activities together.
The students that have already gone there said that the experience it´s amazing!
